We Can All Improve Because None Of Us Are Perfect

People tell me I’m a “good” presenter. I’ve keynoted conferences, moderated panels and presented to clients and colleagues hundreds of times – even made a few national news television appearances. But still…I’m not as good as I could be. My passion and authority over subject matter are what’s saved me from less-than-perfect presentation skills. I’m far from perfect, but I want to get better.

With prodding from a few close colleagues and family, I invested in my first session with esteemed media and presentation-coach Pat Murphy. Considering I’m in the throes of a new startup, I made the “Clickable story” my training ground. I gave the pitch over and over and over again.

How did it go? Presenting on the fly, being videotaped up close and absorbing critique is unnatural and intimidating for an ego like mine. I’m usually the one harshly critiquing others. Regardless, I sucked it up and embraced the coaching. Now, I have a new benchmark, specific areas identified for improvement and effective tools to reach my goals. I’m now a little better and have a path to go further.

After my session, I turned the camera (err, my Flip camera) back on Pat to get her take on how I did and what I need to do to improve. As you can imagine, posting this video requires a good deal of humility. But one thing is certain: I now have a permanent, public record to keep me in check. Until I reach the next level.

We can all improve because none of us are perfect. That’s why coaching is good.
